The latest Hunger Games film dominated day one at the popular Comic-Con Event which this year is taking place in San Diego, California. The popular five day event takes place every year and celebrates the crossroads of comic books, pop culture, television and movies and attracts thousands of fans each year. The 45 year old annual comics confab not only captures the imagination of fans but also gains worldwide media attention. This year the event runs from Thursday 9th July till Sunday the 12th July. Fans attend the event dressed in various costumes which represent popular comic book characters that are being featured at the event.
At the first day of the event which took place last night those fans lucky enough to be inside the famous Hall H convention centre which has a capacity of 6,500 were treated to the trailer of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 movie which is due to be released on November 20th this year. This movie will bring an end to one of the most successful young adult book to film adaptations seen in recent years and fans at the event got a taste of what they can expect when the movie is out. The director of the movie Francis Lawrence stated that the trailer will not be released to the general public for some time yet so people who attended the first day of the comic-con event where in for a treat. Not only did they witness the trailer but they also got to participate in a question and answer session with the movies cast which included stars such as Willow Shields, Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

Over the last decade young adult fiction has become a powerful force at the pop culture convention. Although it may not be as genre-defining and ubiquitous to something like the Star Wars films, young adult fiction has still captured the public’s attention. The Hunger Games franchise, which has been ever present at the Comic-Con event with cast members and exclusive first looks since 2012, has largely built its presence thanks in part to momentum generated by cultural powerhouses such as the Harry Potter and Twilight sequences.

During the question and answer session with the cast of the film, Jennifer Lawrence was asked how it would feel to say goodbye to a character that’s made her a worldwide star and she replied “I don’t really feel like [the end] has happened yet. It’s such a huge part of my life. These movies changed my life. I don’t think I’ll ever say goodbye. Katniss is a part of me.”

Judging by the trailer this movie will be somewhat different to part one. The first part mainly dealt with the politics of war and featured very little action which distinguished the first two Hunger Games movies. Just like the novels by Suzanne Collins, on which the films are based, if the trailer is anything to go by then the Hunger Games is all set to go out with a bang.
